The Grade I Listed castle was built between 1812 and 1822 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford- Hesketh as a memorial to his mother’s ancestors, the Lloyds of Gwrych. It was on built the site of a ruined Elizabethan house named, ‘Y Fron.’
Many important architects and designers are associated with the castle and estate for example- Charles Augustus Busby and Thomas Richman.
During World War II, as part of the Kindertransport programme, the Government used the castle to house 200 Jewish refugees. Following the war, the castle and estate left the Dundonald family and was opened to the public as a visitor attraction.
In the early 1950s, the castle grounds were used as a training venue for the English World Middleweight boxing champion Randolph Turpin. Later, it was the occasional venue for the famous motorcycle Dragon Rally and a centre of medieval re-enactments, jousting and banquets.
When the castle went into disrepair, it took a 12-year-old boy’s campaign and hard work to save the castle. He later became an historian, Dr Mark Baker, and has helped to form the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust which now owns and restores the castle!
